FAQs

Is it dangerous to take Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) is listed as FDA Category C which means that either studies on animals have shown an adverse effect from the medication and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women, OR no animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women.  Women who are pregnant should be cautious when deciding to use Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim), and should not use it unless the benefits truly outweigh the risks.  They should make this decision with the help of a trusted doctor.  There is little conclusive evidence for either medication regarding its effect on a breastfeeding infant, and therefore the same caution should be shown when a breastfeeding mother is considering using Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) to treat an infection.
