Generic Zovirax Ointment

The herpes virus needs an enzyme called DNA polymerase to copy its genetic material from RNA to DNA. This process is necessary for the virus to multiply and continue to survive. When Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) is applied, its active ingredient Acyclovir is converted to a more active form inside those cells of the body that are infected with herpes simplex. Acyclovir then works by blocking the action of the DNA polymerase. This way it prevents the herpes virus from reproducing and infecting more cells. This controls the infection and helps the immune system to deal with it.

Apply sufficient quantity to adequately cover all lesions every 3 hours, 6 times per day for 7 days. The dose size per application will vary depending upon the total lesion area but should approximate a one-half inch ribbon of ointment per 4 square inches of surface area. A finger cot or rubber glove should be used when applying Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) to prevent autoinoculation of other body sites and transmission of infection to other persons.Therapy should be initiated as early as possible following onset of signs and symptoms. 

There isn’t enough information available about the effects of Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) on pregnant women. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor first before using this medication.
Breastfeeding women are advised not to use Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) as this medication passes into breast-milk and may harm a nursing infant.

The effects of Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) on a herpes infection are usually felt within 24 hours of the first application. Treatment usually lasts between 5-10 days.

Use Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) only on your affected skin. Do not swallow Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir). Do not applyGeneric Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) to the eyes, inside the mouth or nose or on unaffected skin. Do not use Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) for genital herpes. Do not cover the cold sore area with a bandage or dressing unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Do not apply another type of skin product (for example, cosmetics, sun screens, or lip balms) or other skin medication to the cold sore area while using Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Do not bathe, shower, or swim right after applying Generic Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir). This could wash off the medicine.
